Species Report

Scamp Grouper

Scamp are one of the better eating grouper species working the reefs and wrecks off Murrells Inlet, and they have been showing up strong on recent bottom fishing trips.

This time of year they tend to hold tight to structure, which rewards patience on the drop.

Cobia

Cobia have been mixed in as a bonus catch on recent trips, cruising structure and current lines off the Grand Strand.

They have a habit of showing up unannounced and putting up one of the toughest fights of the day.

Blackfin & Vermilion Snapper

Both blackfin and vermilion snapper, sometimes called beeliners, have been filling out the fish box on recent runs.

These reef staples are dependable producers off Murrells Inlet and make for some of the best eating of the trip.

Almaco Jack

Almaco jack rounded out the mixed bag, adding some serious pull to the fight card.

These hard fighting members of the jack family are always a welcome surprise on a reef trip.

Speckled Hind (Released)

The crew also hooked into a speckled hind grouper, a rare catch that gets released every time under current South Atlantic regulations protecting the species.

Landing one is a good sign of a healthy reef system, even when it has to go back in the water.

Between the grouper, snapper and jacks, the reef bite out of Murrells Inlet is worth chasing right now.
